Dry ice blasting is the controlled use of solid CO2 phase-change physics. It combines thermal shock, kinetic energy, and sublimation to remove contaminants without water, abrasives, or chemicals.

Thermal Shock

Dry ice pellets are accelerated to supersonic speeds and strike the contaminated surface at -109°F (-78.5°C). The extreme cold causes the contaminant to become brittle, shrink, and lose adhesion to the substrate below.

This is especially effective on organic residues like soot, mold, grease, and paint that bond tightly to wood, brick, and metal.

Kinetic Impact

The high-velocity pellets deliver concentrated kinetic energy into the now-brittle contaminant layer. This micro-fracturing action breaks the bond between the debris and the substrate without transferring damaging energy to the surface itself.

Because dry ice is softer than sand or glass bead media, it will not etch, profile, or scar the underlying material.

Sublimation

Upon impact, the solid CO2 pellets instantly sublimate — converting from solid to gas and expanding nearly 800 times in volume. This expansion creates tiny lifting forces that blast the loosened debris away from the surface.

Only the removed contaminant remains to be swept or vacuumed. There is no water, no grit, and no chemical runoff.
